Essential Child Healthcare Tips for Parents
Healthy growth depends on more than treating illness. Nutrition, immunisation, sleep, hygiene, safety and developmental monitoring all matter.

Every child’s needs vary with age, growth and health. Regular monitoring, appropriate nutrition, immunisation and a safe environment can help prevent many avoidable problems.
Four foundations for healthy growth
Age-appropriate nutrition
Offer varied foods, adequate protein, vegetables, fruit and safe water in portions suitable for the child’s age and needs.
Immunisation on time
Follow the national schedule and keep the vaccination record. Ask a health worker about any missed dose.
Sleep and activity
Provide age-appropriate sleep, active play and movement, and limit excessive screen time.
Hygiene and safety
Teach handwashing, use safe food and water, and prevent age-specific injuries at home and outdoors.
Monitor learning, language and behaviour—not weight alone
Track weight and height or length, but also notice eye contact, speech, movement, play, social response and school progress. Seek assessment if a child loses a skill or if development concerns you.
Get urgent medical help
Seek prompt care for breathing difficulty, seizures, unusual drowsiness or poor responsiveness, blue lips, severe dehydration, repeated vomiting, bleeding or a child who appears seriously unwell. Fever in a newborn also needs prompt assessment.
Preventive visits matter even when a child seems well
Use routine visits to review growth, development, nutrition, vaccines, oral health, vision or hearing and family risk factors. Do not give antibiotics, cough and cold medicines or supplements without appropriate advice.
